Understanding RIASEC: the six dimensions explained
Holland's career interest model, in plain words
RIASEC is John Holland's framework for career interests. It sorts work activities into six broad dimensions: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional. Your profile is your top three — the order matters.
It's been used for fifty years because it's simple and useful, not because it's perfect. Treat it as a starting map, not a fence.
The six dimensions
Realistic (R) — hands-on, mechanical, outdoor, with tools, machines, animals, or physical systems.
Investigative (I) — puzzles, abstract problems, data, science, ideas-first work.
Artistic (A) — creating, designing, expressing, writing, performing, visual or auditory craft.
Social (S) — teaching, counseling, helping, healing, training, advocacy, community.
Enterprising (E) — persuading, selling, leading, deal-making, business-building, risk-taking.
Conventional (C) — organizing, structuring, finance, ops, compliance, attention-to-detail work.
How to read your top three
Your top dimension is your dominant pull. Your second is the flavor. Your third is the safety net.
I-A-S (investigative-artistic-social) often points toward UX research, design, therapy, education research, science writing.
R-I-C (realistic-investigative-conventional) often points toward engineering, applied sciences, manufacturing, defense.
E-S-C (enterprising-social-conventional) often points toward business development, HR, operations, project management.
A profile doesn't make a career — but a wide gap between your top three and your current job is a useful signal.
Assessments that fit this
Questions, answered
Can my top three change over time?
Yes — slowly. People generally stay in the same RIASEC neighborhood across their twenties, with small shifts in the second and third positions.
What if my profile is flat (no strong top three)?
A flat profile often means the assessment alone isn't enough — a conversation about lived experience usually surfaces the dominant pull.
